I recently returned from South Africa. I’ve been lucky enough to be a relatively frequent visitor over the last couple of years. For the last few trips I have focused on newer, off-the-beaten-track regions such as Elgin, Elim, Hemel-en-Aarde and the Swartland. This time I thought it would be good to revisit South Africa’s most famous and well established wine region: Stellenbosch.

Choosing South Africa’s top 20 wineries

A few days ago I got an email from a prominent South African wine journalist. He wanted me and a colleague to each choose our top 20 South African wineries for an article. We were asked because among UK wine journalists, we have a reasonably good knowledge of South African wines. Overall, 35 people were being polled, with five of these from outside South Africa.

It’s all too easy to stick to the convenient and familiar, but there’s something to be said for making the effort to do discover something new, even if it involves a bit of driving.
