This February, South Africa celebrates the wine industry’s birthday and we raise a glass to the 364th South African grape wine harvest.

On 2nd February 1659, Jan van Riebeeck entered into his diary that, “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.” These words mark the birth of the wine industry in South Africa – an event that is still celebrated on that day each year by the South African wine community as they mark the start of South Africa’s wine harvest celebrations.

Of course, it's nice if a birthday lasts a whole month so as the South African wine industry invites everyone to raise their glasses in tribute to South Africa’s rich wine heritage, we hope you will join us in the celebrations.
